The Ultimate Diffuser Guide to using Essential Oils Aromatically in your home
I diffuse essential oils religiously in my home all day long. I have a total of 3 diffusers that get worked hard everyday!
In the morning I intuitively chose my oils while I am preparing my coffee.
I open my drawer of essential oils and feel pulled to one almost instantly. From there I become a blending wizard and mix the oils that I am craving and compliment the primary oil best.
In the afternoon I typically diffuse essential oils that are uplifting and invigorating like Peppermint + Wild Orange. Or any other citrus oil. Citrus oils are used A LOT in this house.
In the evening I bring our vibe down with a blend or single use of Serenity, Lavender + Balance.
If you are brand new to the essential oil world then let’s break down what Diffusion is, why it is so beneficial, some myth busters, the diffusers I recommend and some very beautiful blends for your home!
What is Diffusion:
Using essential oils in a diffuser is an enjoyable and effective way to experience aromatherapy in your home. Through air diffusion, a few drops of essential oil can deliver therapeutic aromatherapy throughout one or more rooms while clearing the air and creating a pleasantly fragrant environment.
There are many different types of diffusers to choose from. Since heat can cause essential oils to evaporate and degrade quickly, cold air diffusion is typically preferred over heat diffusion to obtain full therapeutic effects. Single essential oils can be chosen for a desired effect, or several oils can be used in the diffuser together to create a custom aroma with multiple therapeutic benefits.
Diffusers disperse essential oils as a fine vapor throughout the air so they can be absorbed gently into the body through the respiratory system. The aroma can prompt the nervous system to transmit signals to the limbic system in the brain – the same part of the brain that houses emotion and memory. The brain may respond by initiating various physiological functions, such as a release of hormones or a positive boost in mood.
The benefits of using essential oils aromatically and in a diffuser:
1. Cleansing the air
2. Improving the quality of the air
3. Reduce threats
4. Create an inviting space
5. Chemical free air freshener
6. Enhance concentration
7. Help to create greater spiritual, physical, and emotional harmony
8. Mood management
Emotions, Aromatherapy and Diffusion:
Essential oils have been used for centuries as a therapeutic tool aid in cognition and mental health. When examining emotional states we can actually observe emotions as chemical reactions occurring in the brain.
Emotions are naturally-occurring chemical molecules that carry information from the brain to the body. They travel throughout the body and bind to cellular receptors. Once this information is received, the message is received inside the cell and impacts the way the cell functions and can effectively change your overall mood and behaviour. Therefore, most of the ailments we see stem from a chemical imbalance in the body and brain.
Because both emotions and essential oils are chemically-based the oils have a powerful connection with the body. They promote emotional detoxification, purification and anchor emotions by promoting healthy biochemistry within the body. Since the oils are so molecularly dense a single drop can reach every single cell in the body within minutes.
Aromatherapy is a powerful tool to combat changes in emotional states. Smell is the fastest way to affect the mood and because it is processed in the limbic system, inhaling essential oils tackle the root of the problem rapidly!
Have you walked into someones home and instantly be reminded of something from your past? Maybe it’s cookies in the oven and you instantly remember how excited you were when Grandma came over to bake with you. Or perhaps it’s the tropical smell of coconut, taking you back to careless vacations on the beach. We can all relate to this phenomenon, but why does it happen?
How does it all work?
Our brain is an amazing organ, processing infinite amounts of sensory information every single day. While most of our conscious thought is generated by the outer portion of the organ - the cerebral cortex - our emotions stem from a more primal area of the brain, known as the limbic system.
The Limbic System:
The limbic brain houses the thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala, and hippocampus, which collectively control instinct, mood, and basic emotion and drives. Although the limbic system is involuntarily controlled by the body, it has a huge influence on our both our conscious and unconscious thoughts and behaviour.
The limbic system is also some to the olfactory bulb - the region of the brain that processes information from the sense of smell. Research has shown that because of this, what we smell is highly linked with our emotional state.
Aromatherapy can play a big part in balance, control, desire, hunger and management all because of its inter-relationship with the limbic system. Whether the oils are rubbed on in massage oil or inhaled through a diffuser, the odor molecules will travel to their limbic destination and create the appropriate neurochemicals to affect a physical response.
Diffuser myth busters:
MYTH: Diffusing around pets is toxic.
TRUTH: Diffusing around pets is an excellent way to benefit them on a regular basis. It is best to use a water-based diffuser (such as the Lumo® Diffuser) on an intermittent setting. Allow your pet the option to exit the room by leaving the door open, and only use three to four drops of oil at a time in the diffuser.
MYTH: It is not safe to diffuse around young children.
TRUTH: When used appropriately, the diffusion of essential oils can be enjoyed by the entire family. Using a diffuser in the home is very safe; however, if you are concerned, start with the lowest setting on your diffuser and adjust according to your comfort level.
MYTH: You cannot diffuse essential oils that contain coconut oil.
TRUTH: Our essential oil blends have been specifically tested and found not to damage doTERRA® diffusers. As long as you properly maintain and regularly clean your diffuser, we would not anticipate any issues diffusing doTERRA oil blends that contain coconut oil.
How to use Your Diffuser:
Use clean, room-temperature tap water. Make sure the water level does not exceed the water mark.
Add 5–12 drops of doTERRA essential oils. You can add more oil for a stronger scent. Experiment with the amount of oil you use and find what works best for you.
How to Quick-Clean your diffuser after Each Use
Make sure to unplug your diffuser prior to cleaning.
When removing excess water from the water tank, pour from the rear of the diffuser to avoid spilling on the operating buttons.
Clean the inside of the water tank and the outside of the diffuser with a small amount of neutral detergent cotton cloth or a small foam brush. Avoid using any harsh cleaners on your diffuser.
Rinse and dry.
Use a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to wipe the ultrasonic mist chip found inside the water tank.
How to Deep Clean your Diffuser Every Month
Cleaning is a necessary step to ensure that oil residue doesn’t build up in your machine preventing it from working properly. Periodically, it is a good idea to run your diffuser through a cleaning cycle. If you use your unit every day, then running a cleaning cycle monthly is a good idea. To do so, do the following:
Fill your diffuser half way with clean water.
Add 10 drops of white vinegar.
Let the diffuser run for about 5 minutes to allow the water-vinegar mixture to disperse throughout the unit and clean it.
Drain the diffuser completely.
Using a cotton swab dipped in vinegar, clean the tight spots and corners of the diffuser.
Rinse with clean water.
Use a dry cloth to wipe the diffuser and dry it thoroughly.
Blend Ahead Tip:
Is there a blend you’re obsessed with?
Make a custom 15ml bottle of it!
Grab an empty 15ml essential oil bottle and fill it with the listed portions of each oil in that blend.
Add a dropper to the top and simply drop 3-4 drops into your diffuser!
Make sure you label your ratios that you used so you can make it again in the future!
I like to use stickers of each oil used and I just write the amount/portion of that oil right on the sticker.
The best one to buy
I have bought so many diffusers since I started really using essential oils.
The first two I purchased on amazon.
They had a short life. The motor was loud. They had so much left over water when the diffuser shut off that I was pissed every time I used them. So much waste. My valuable and precious oils being wasted.
I then bought some off a reputable essential oil shop that carries amazing products and books.
Again, the same problems.
Finally, two years after buying my very first essential oil kit I invested in a diffuser from dōTERRA.
What a difference.
Now I will only purchase my diffusers from my back office. Another store will not get my money. It is always wasted.
Here I am going to show you the only two I have used, love and recommend.
